message from the dean
Hello Texas Engineering Community,
Welcome to the newest edition of Texas Engineer magazine! It’s been another busy and exciting year of innovation at the Cockrell School.
It’s also been a challenging year, both at Cockrell and for academia as a whole. However, we will continue to rely on our strong community and culture to provide hands-on, experiential education opportunities for students, preparing them to become future leaders and problem-solvers.
That’s why we’re highlighting the people who make this school one of the best in the nation. And it certainly takes a village to keep a top engineering program running: students and faculty who are relentless in their research pursuits; alumni out in the world tackling the biggest challenges facing our society; and hundreds of staff members who do everything to support our quest to become the highest-impact public engineering program.
In this year’s magazine, you’ll get to know a few folks from these groups. You’ll learn about the Texas Engineers whose job is not engineering. You’ll meet alumni who are building essential things all over the world—including the Cockrell School’s third new building in the last decade. And we salute a retiring legend and a recent graduate ready to take the world by storm.
In addition to these fantastic people, we’re exploring one of everyone’s favorite subjects: traffic! Plus, hear tales of failure big and small, including my own. And don’t forget to take a crack at our first engineering crossword!
Thanks for reading and Hook ‘em!
Sincerely,
Roger T. Bonnecaze
